KMC officials raid shopping malls in Kolkata to check food quality standards

6 September 2026 colorsnews.in

Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS) Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials on Sunday raided various parts of the city to check whether food safety rules are being followed.

The raids were conducted at various restaurants and food courts of several well known shopping malls.

On Sunday afternoon, KMC officials raided the food courts of South City Mall, Highland Park and Acropolis Mall. They entered the food courts and inspected the management there.

They checked whether the quality of the food stored in the food courts was good or not, whether they were stored in the right way. They also checked how frozen foods were stored.

Along with this, the municipal officials also raided various restaurants in the Bentinck Street area in central Kolkata.

The quality of food at the Alia Hotel was checked there.

The officials collected samples of some food stored in the refrigerator of that restaurant.

The operation was also conducted in restaurants like Ahar, Amber, and Ami Bengali.

During the operation, the officials threw away several food items stored in the refrigerator of Ami Bengali.

Along with Kolkata, the operation was also conducted in various restaurants in Salt Lake. There, too, the municipal officials checked the quality of raw materials and spices in the kitchens of several restaurants.

On Saturday afternoon, officials of the KMC’s Food Safety Department raided food stalls at Dacres Lane, Jorabagan and Lake Market areas.

The quality of food in all the shops in Dacres Lane was checked. There, a storeroom of a shop was raided and sweets which had expired but still kept in refrigerators were thrown into the dustbin.

Municipal officials also collected samples of fritters and fried items from food shops at Dacres Lane on Saturday.

On the instructions of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the Food Safety Department’s operation is going on across the state.

The ‘Buyer Protection Week’ has already started in West Bengal from August 31.

Inaugurating this programme at the Hog Market (New Market) premises, the Chief Minister had said that the state government will follow a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against any kind of dishonest business — flat fraud, application of harmful colours to vegetables and fish or manipulation of measurements.
