FIR registered against Iqra Hasan; accused of blocking road, creating ruckus outside DIG office

Saharanpur, May 22 (IANS) A case has been registered in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district against Samajwadi Party MP, Iqra Hasan, in connection with a protest held outside the office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) on May 19. The FIR accuses the Kairana MP and her supporters of blocking a road, creating a disturbance, and obstructing official duties during a demonstration related to the Sonu Kashyap murder case.

Apart from Iqra Hasan, seven named individuals and 25 unidentified people have also been booked under various sections of the law. The FIR was registered at the Sadar Bazar Police Station based on a complaint filed by the incharge of the Civil Lines Police Outpost.

According to police officials, Hasan and her supporters allegedly blocked the main road outside the DIG office, leading to severe traffic disruption and inconvenience to the public. The complaint further alleged that the protest violated prohibitory orders and obstructed government functioning.

Police said legal action was initiated after reviewing the incident and gathering evidence. Authorities are also examining viral videos and CCTV footage to identify the unidentified accused persons mentioned in the FIR. Officials indicated that further legal action could follow as the investigation progresses.

The incident has triggered fresh political tensions in the district, with Samajwadi Party workers expressing anger over the FIR lodged against the MP and her supporters.

The controversy stems from the murder case of Monu Kashyap, a resident of Dashale village in Shamli district, who was allegedly killed on April 21. According to reports, the victim’s family had been seeking justice for several weeks and had approached multiple officials regarding the case.

On May 19, Iqra Hasan reached the DIG office in Saharanpur along with members of the victim’s family and her supporters to press for action in the murder case. During the visit, Hasan allegedly staged a sit-in protest and road blockade outside the DIG office to express solidarity with the victim’s family and demand justice.

According to reports, after the meeting at the DIG office failed to yield any immediate outcome, Hasan stepped outside the office premises, where a woman police inspector, accompanied by a police contingent, escorted her to the police station.

Iqra Hasan later alleged that she was detained at the Women’s Police Station for around ten minutes. During the course of the protest, five individuals were booked under charges related to disturbing the peace and were sent to jail. Those detained included former State Minister Mangeram Kashyap, along with Anuj, Ajay, Shishpal, and Tejpal.

Hasan accused the police of quietly sending the five individuals to jail without initially disclosing details about any FIR against her. Following the detention of the party workers, the Samajwadi Party MP staged another sit-in protest outside the Sadar Bazar Police Station, demanding their immediate release.

The protest at the police station reportedly continued from around 4 P.M. until 9:30 P.M. During the demonstration, heated arguments allegedly took place between Hasan and police officials.

According to eyewitness accounts, the MP challenged the police personnel during the confrontation, saying, “Shoot me! Hang me! What more could you possibly do?”

The five individuals who had been detained under Section 151 were released the following day.

Speaking during the protest, Iqra Hasan stated that ordinary citizens were not being heard by authorities when they approached officials with grievances. She said, “Now only one course of action remains: Either send us to jail as well, or release our party workers. We are fully prepared to go to jail.”

Later that night, City Magistrate Kuldeep Singh arrived at the police station and assured the protesters that the arrested individuals, including Mangeram Kashyap, would be released on Wednesday morning. Following the assurance, Hasan called off the protest.

Political activity intensified again after copies of the FIR surfaced publicly, leading to renewed anger among Samajwadi Party supporters in the district.

Following a sit-in protest in Saharanpur, the MP travelled to Lucknow that very night—accompanied by a victim of ration-related grievances to meet with SP Supremo Akhilesh Yadav. Subsequently, Akhilesh Yadav provided financial assistance of Rs 200,000.
