Assam flood: Nadda visits relief camps, assures full assistance from Centre
Guwahati, Aug 5 (IANS) Union Health Minister, J.P. Nadda, on Wednesday assured Assam of the Centre’s unwavering support for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in flood-affected areas, saying the state would receive all necessary assistance to help people rebuild their lives.
Union Minister Nadda, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited the flood-ravaged Bihubor and Nepali Khuti areas in Sivasagar district to assess the ground situation and interact with families affected by the recent deluge.
Addressing residents during the visit, the Union minister said the Central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands firmly with the people of Assam and will ensure that relief and rehabilitation work is carried out without any resource constraints.
“On behalf of the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I assure Himanta Biswa Sarma and all of you that there will be no shortage of relief assistance. Complete financial assistance is being extended to the state,” Nadda said.
He added that teams deputed by the Centre were already conducting detailed assessments of the damage caused by the floods to facilitate timely rehabilitation and restoration.
“Central teams are assessing the scale of damage here. We are fully engaged in rehabilitation efforts,” he said.
The Bihubor and Nepali Khuti areas of Sivasagar district have witnessed widespread destruction due to the floods, with hundreds of houses damaged, agricultural fields submerged and livestock lost.
The deluge also disrupted roads and public infrastructure, forcing many families to move to relief camps and temporary shelters.
During the visit, Nadda and Sarma met displaced residents and reviewed the difficulties being faced by families who suffered losses of homes, household belongings, crops and livelihoods.
The visit comes as the Assam government continues relief operations and damage assessment across flood-affected districts.
The state administration has announced compensation and financial assistance for damaged houses, crop losses, livestock deaths and livelihood restoration, while restoration of public infrastructure is also underway.
The Centre’s assurance is expected to provide a further boost to rehabilitation efforts as authorities work to restore normalcy and support thousands of families affected by the floods across Upper Assam.
