Heavy rain likely in southern, eastern districts of Rajasthan today

Jaipur, Aug 10 (IANS) The Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall at several places across southern and eastern Rajasthan on Monday and Tuesday, with isolated areas likely to receive very heavy rainfall.

The forecast comes amid the strengthening of monsoon activity under the influence of a low-pressure system and an active cyclonic circulation over the region. The monsoon remains active across Rajasthan, with the Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for seven districts and forecasting heavy rainfall in parts of southeastern Rajasthan on Monday. A yellow alert has also been issued for 24 districts.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across several parts of the state until August 13, with weather conditions likely to begin improving in western Rajasthan from August 14 and in eastern Rajasthan from August 15.

Meanwhile, heavy rain on Sunday caused waterlogging in several areas. Jaipur’s Kanota Dam overflowed, while roads in Sri Dungargarh, Bikaner, were inundated, with rainwater flowing through the streets like rivers.

Heavy rainfall was also reported in Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar, while Shahbad in Baran recorded nearly 2 inches of rain. Temperatures fell by up to two degrees Celsius in Nagaur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Kota and Pratapgarh, while temperatures increased in some districts, including Jhunjhunu, Alwar and Churu.

The maximum temperature across Rajasthan remained below 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Barmer recorded the state’s highest temperature at 39.9 degrees Celsius.

According to Radheshyam Sharma, Director of the Meteorological Centre, Jaipur, a low-pressure area has developed over northeastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining parts of Chhattisgarh and is gradually moving northwestward.

The monsoon trough has also shifted southward from the north and returned to its normal position. It currently extends through Bikaner, Gwalior, northeastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Puri towards the Bay of Bengal.

A cyclonic circulation is also active over northeastern Rajasthan and adjoining areas. Under the influence of these weather systems, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected at several places in southern and eastern Rajasthan on August 10 and 11, with isolated instances of very heavy rainfall possible.

The rainy spell is expected to continue through August 13. Weather conditions are likely to become comparatively dry in western Rajasthan from August 14, while rainfall activity in eastern Rajasthan is expected to decline from August 15, said officials.
