T20 WC: All the stats from Pakistan’s narrow win over Sri Lanka in Super 8s clash

Kandy, Mar 1 (IANS) Pakistan signed off their campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a narrow five-run win over Sri Lanka, but the victory was not enough to take them into the next stage due to an inferior Net Run Rate. The match was played at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy on Saturday.

Batting first, Pakistan posted a massive 212/8, led by a superb opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman. Farhan smashed 100 off 60 balls, becoming the first batter to score two centuries in a single T20 World Cup edition, while Fakhar added a rapid 84. Despite late wickets, Pakistan crossed the 200-run mark with ease.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost early wickets but fought back through partnerships in the middle overs. Captain Dasun Shanaka played a sensational unbeaten knock of 76, keeping Sri Lanka in the hunt till the final over. Needing 28 runs off the last six balls, Shanaka hit three sixes and a four, but Sri Lanka fell just short at 207/5.

Although Pakistan won the match, they failed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 runs, which meant they could not overtake New Zealand on Net Run Rate and were eliminated from the tournament.

‘I want to say sorry to all the fans’: Dasun Shanaka apologises after Sri Lanka’s poor World Cup campaign

Kandy, Mar 1 (IANS) Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka apologised to fans and blamed injuries and missed moments after his team crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2026, despite a fighting performance in their final Super 8 match against Pakistan at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy on Saturday.

Shanaka played a courageous, unbeaten knock of 76, but Sri Lanka fell short by five runs while chasing Pakistan’s imposing total of 212. Although Sri Lanka finished on 207, they could not cross the mark, while Pakistan were also eliminated due to net run-rate calculations.

Reflecting on the loss, Shanaka admitted the game slipped away at the end. He said it was ‘that close’ and felt he could have finished the match, while also crediting Shaheen Afridi for holding his nerve in the final over. Sri Lanka needed 28 runs in the last six balls, and despite Shanaka hitting three sixes and a four, Pakistan defended the total. “It was that close of a game where I could have finished it. But yeah, unfortunate. Well bowled to Shaheen,” he said in the post-match presentation.

Shanaka also took responsibility for lapses under pressure and once again apologised to supporters. “Sometimes, as players, we feel the pressure as well. It was a mistake by me. I wanted to say sorry to all the fans for disheartening them,” he said.

Calling it a tough tournament, Shanaka pointed to injuries as a major setback and apologised to supporters for disappointing them. He felt Sri Lanka could have reached the semifinals if they had a full-strength squad, especially missing two key bowlers.

“It’s been a tough campaign for us. We had a few injuries. I want to say sorry to all the fans because unfortunately, we fell down because of those injuries. Otherwise, we could have probably made it to a semifinal,” he admitted.

“Missing two key bowlers was a big loss. At times of a World Cup, you need your players to be there. It affects the strength and the mentality,” Shanaka explained.

Despite the exit, Shanaka highlighted positives for the future, praising young batters Pawan Rathnayake and Dunith Wellalage for their growth and consistency, expressing confidence that Sri Lankan cricket has a bright road ahead.

“Pawan has been very consistent and is using the crease very well. We also have Wellalage. They are growing, and hopefully they will have a bright future ahead,” Shanaka concluded.

Power tussle for K’taka CM’s chair will intensify after state Budget: Former CM Bommai

Haveri (Karnataka), March 1 (IANS) The internal power tussle within the Congress-led Karnataka government will intensify and reach its final phase after the state Budget, said former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Basavaraj Bommai while referring to the leadership tussle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

“It will turn into a direct confrontation, and there will be no possibility of reconciliation. We will have to wait and see how it unfolds,” Bommai added.

Speaking to the media in Haveri, the former Chief Minister said that the people have completely lost faith in the state government.

The electorate is waiting to remove this (Congress-led state) government from power in Karnataka, he added on Saturday.

“The heat of public anger is now being felt by the Karnataka Congress MLAs. There is an atmosphere of uncertainty, and many legislators fear they may not be re-elected. Some are going abroad, while others are heading to resorts,” he said while criticising the Karnataka government.

“The Congress high command has no effective control. In the coming days, people will send them home, whether from Karnataka, Delhi, or even abroad, by taking away the reins of the state,” Bommai added.

Responding to a query about the murder of a minor boy in Shivamogga, the former Chief Minister said the incident was deeply painful.

“There are suspicions that ganja use at a young age may have played a role. The BJP had earlier warned that ganja consumption in Karnataka had reached school levels, and that has now proved true,” Bommai added.

“The Karnataka government must take strict action. If communal feelings develop among small children, how can society progress? If leaders remain busy fighting over chairs of power, how will society function?” he asked.

He accused the Karnataka government of failing not only in maintaining law and order but also in preserving social harmony.

“Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is the most senior leader of the BJP in the state. He is a towering leader who built and strengthened the BJP across Karnataka. Whatever he fought for, he implemented while in power, and thus he remains in the hearts of the people,” Bommai said, praising former Chief Minister Yediyurappa.

“Looking at his determination and enthusiasm, age is no barrier for him. He has declared that he will once again tour the state to strengthen the party and bring it back to power,” he added.

“We are all happy to build the BJP under his (B.S. Yediyurappa’s) blessings and guidance. He is an asset and a source of strength for the party, and there is nothing wrong in utilising that strength,” Bommai said.

“Yediyurappa has spent 50 years in politics and has served as the Chief Minister four times. His guidance will be necessary to respond effectively to the present Congress and to provide good governance in the coming days,” he added.

“The celebration of his 50 years of meaningful public service will serve as a prelude to political change in the 2028 Assembly elections, and we are fully prepared for that,” Bommai said.

When asked about bringing back leaders who have left the BJP through a “ghar wapsi” initiative, he added that the matter needs serious consideration.

“It will be discussed in the BJP’s core committee, and senior party leaders in Delhi will take the final decision. The party will take all necessary steps to bring the BJP back to power in 2028,” he said.

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) Two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu, who was left stranded at the Dubai Airport on Saturday en route to Birmingham in England as flight operations were suspended owing to escalating tensions between Iran and the US-Israel, is safe and hoping for things to settle down soon.

“Praying for calm and safety for everone affected,” said Sindhu in her post on Instagram,” said Sindhu in her post on her Instagram handle.

Sindhu’s flight was returned to Dubai Airport because of threats of attack by Iran over American and Israeli assets in the region.

The former World No.1 in women’s singles put out the Insta story on her official handle with the caption, ‘All flights suspended until further notice.’

“PV Sindhu was set to travel to the All England, but got stuck in Dubai. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) is in touch with her as well as Emirates. CM Siddaramaiah assures safety of Kannadigas amid Israel-Iran conflict; helpline to be launched

Bengaluru, Feb 28 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the state government has taken the safety of Kannadigas residing in Middle Eastern countries seriously in view of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said Kannadigas living in countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar are being closely monitored, and necessary steps are being taken to ensure their safety.

He said discussions have been held with the Resident Commissioner in New Delhi, and officials have been instructed to take all required measures to safeguard Kannadigas in the region.

Siddaramaiah noted that flight services in several Middle Eastern countries have been suspended due to the conflict, leaving many people stranded and unable to return to India.

He appealed to those affected to move to safer locations and strictly follow advisories issued by local authorities and Indian missions.

The Chief Minister also said he has directed officials to launch a dedicated helpline from Saturday to assist Kannadigas and their families.

He urged family members not to panic if they are unable to immediately contact their relatives, assuring that the government is actively working to ensure the safety of every Kannadiga in the affected regions.

Meanwhile, former minister B. Nagendra has informed the Chief Minister that 32 persons from Ballari are currently stranded in Dubai. Siddaramaiah said the government has taken note of the matter and is initiating necessary steps to ensure their safety and extend assistance.

It may be recalled that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held back-to-back telephone conversations with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts on Saturday, expressing India’s deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation in West Asia following a reported joint US–Israel strike on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions.

The diplomatic outreach comes amid heightened tensions after explosions were reported in Tehran and other locations, with Iran launching missiles towards Israel and US bases across the Gulf region.

The strikes were described by Israel as pre-emptive, while the United States termed the operation “Operation Epic Fury”, targeting Iranian military and leadership sites. The action prompted retaliatory missile launches on US-linked facilities in multiple countries.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the operations and called on Iranians to seek regime change, while Iranian officials vowed a strong response.

The escalation has triggered fears of a wider regional conflict, with international humanitarian organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, warning of a potentially dangerous chain reaction.

Iran war: Centcom details start of Operation Epic Fury

Washington, Feb 28, (IANS) The U.S. Central Command said it commenced “Operation Epic Fury” in the early hours of Saturday, describing it as the largest regional concentration of American military firepower in a generation.

In a statement issued from Tampa, Florida, CENTCOM said the operation began “at the direction of the President of the United States.”

U.S. and partner forces started striking targets at 1:15 a.m. Eastern Time “to dismantle the Iranian regime’s security apparatus, prioritising locations that posed an imminent threat,” the statement said.

According to CENTCOM, targets included Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command and control facilities, Iranian air defence capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields.

“The President ordered bold action, and our brave Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen are answering the call,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM.

The command said the first hours of the operation involved precision munitions launched from air, land and sea platforms. It also confirmed that CENTCOM’s Task Force Scorpion Strike employed low-cost one-way attack drones for the first time in combat.

Following the initial wave of U.S. and partner strikes, CENTCOM forces “successfully defended against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks,” the statement said.

“There have been no reports of U.S. casualties or combat-related injuries,” it added, noting that damage to U.S. installations was minimal and has not impacted operations.

CENTCOM said Operation Epic Fury represents “the largest regional concentration of American military firepower in a generation,” underscoring the scale of the campaign now underway in and around Iran.

The statement did not specify the duration of the operation but indicated that strikes were ongoing as of early Saturday.

Priyanka Gandhi criticises Centre over aid, calls Wayanad rebuild a collective effort

Wayanad, Feb 28 (IANS) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad and AICC General Secretary, on Saturday criticised the Centre for being “not very forthcoming” in extending financial assistance to survivors of the July 2024 landslides, even as she welcomed the pace and quality of rehabilitation work in the district.

Addressing the media during her visit, the Congress leader said she was “very happy” to see the progress on the ground and expressed satisfaction with the standard of housing being constructed.

“Looks to me like the quality of at least the house that I have seen is good. Anything that is done for those who have survived such a terrible tragedy will make us all happy. I have no adverse comment,” she said.

When asked whether the rehabilitation effort could serve as a model for the country, she said she would refrain from comparisons.

“Honestly, I haven’t seen others, so I can’t say,” she said, adding that one suggestion she had was to plant more trees in the township area.

On the involvement of various stakeholders, she observed that governments typically have greater financial resources and quicker access to permits and clearances.

“Obviously, we are all making an effort,” she said, noting that the Indian National Congress has committed to constructing 100 houses and recently launched its housing initiative in the presence of Rahul Gandhi.

She acknowledged that the party’s project took time due to the need for necessary permissions and clearances.

She also pointed out that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had constructed houses for affected families and described the rehabilitation process as a “collective effort,” appreciating the contributions of political parties as well as the government.

However, she was critical of the Centre’s response to the disaster.

“The Centre has not been very forthcoming,” she said, adding that the matter had been raised repeatedly in Parliament.

She said she had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with other MPs from Kerala to press for greater assistance.

While the demand to declare the tragedy a national disaster was not accepted, she said it was later categorised as one of “severe nature” following sustained representations.

On whether the issue could become a political plank ahead of elections, Vadra said some degree of political discussion was natural.

“If you have done something, you will talk about it. If you haven’t done anything, there is nothing to talk about,” she remarked.

Responding to questions on financial contributions, she clarified that Congress MPs opted to directly assist victims through independent housing initiatives instead of routing funds to the state government’s township project. She emphasised that the priority was to provide tangible and timely assistance to affected families.

Bengal SIR: Maximum ‘under adjudication’ cases in 3 B’desh-bordering districts

Kolkata, Feb 28 (IANS) As the final voters’ list in West Bengal, prepared under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, was published on Saturday, official statistics showed that the maximum number of “under adjudication” cases are concentrated in three Bangladesh-bordering districts — Murshidabad, Malda and North 24 Parganas. Of these, Murshidabad and Malda are minority-dominated districts.

The “under adjudication” category comprises cases of “logical discrepancy” that have been referred for judicial scrutiny by officers appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for this purpose.

According to data available from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, out of around 60 lakh voters’ documents referred for judicial adjudication, the highest number is from Murshidabad district. A total of 11,01,145 cases from Murshidabad have been referred, accounting for roughly 18.35 per cent of the total cases under judicial adjudication.

In Malda district, another minority-dominated district sharing a border with Bangladesh, 8,28,127 cases have been referred for judicial adjudication. This constitutes approximately 13.80 per cent of the total cases under adjudication.

In North 24 Parganas district, which also shares a border with Bangladesh, 5,91,252 cases have been referred for judicial adjudication, accounting for around 9.85 per cent of the total cases.

Taken together, these three districts account for nearly 42 per cent of the total “under adjudication” cases in the state.

The cases under adjudication are currently being examined by over 500 judicial officers appointed by the ECI in compliance with directions of the Supreme Court. Depending on the progress of the adjudication process, a supplementary list will be published in due course. Only after completion of this exercise will the final status of the electoral rolls become clear.

The final voters’ list published on Saturday showed that 61,78,245 names have been deleted so far under the SIR process.

The number of deletions is expected to rise further, as identity documents of around 60 lakh voters remain under judicial adjudication.

Iran strike push for ‘freedom’, claims Trump

Washington, Feb 28 (IANS) President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed “freedom” for the Iranian people is his central goal as the United States launched what officials described as a multiday military operation against Iran, in a move that leading American newspapers have framed as both a bid for regime change and a high-risk “war of choice.”

“All I want is freedom for the people,” Trump told The Washington Post in a brief phone interview shortly after 4 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday.

“I want a safe nation, and that’s what we’re going to have,” he said.

A U.S. official said the operation began at about 1 a.m. Eastern time with ship-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles and air-launched munitions from U.S. Air Force and Navy jets. The administration has named the campaign “Operation Epic Fury.”

Iran quickly launched counterstrikes, targeting multiple U.S. military bases, including the support facility for its 5th Fleet ships in Bahrain, according to the official. While operations are ongoing, no U.S. service members have been injured, the official said.

Israel also said it launched attacks on Iran on Saturday.

In a prerecorded video message released around 2:30 a.m., Trump announced “major combat operations.” He urged Iranians, once the strikes cease, to “take over your government,” telling them, “this will probably be your only chance for generations.”

He acknowledged the risks.

“The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties,” Trump said in his taped remarks. “That often happens in war. But we’re doing this, not for now. We’re doing this for the future, and it is a noble mission.”

He added: “No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight.”

“Now you have a president who is giving you what you want, so let’s see how you respond,” he said. “America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force.”

Trump framed the strikes as necessary to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” accusing Tehran of a campaign of “mass terror” against the United States for 47 years and of being “probably involved” in the al-Qaeda attack on the USS Cole in 2000.

He invoked the 1979 hostage crisis and the 1983 bombing of U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut.

“I built and rebuilt our military in my first administration,” Trump said, “and there is no military on Earth even close to its power, strength or sophistication.”

The Wall Street Journal editorial board, writing before U.S. military action began, argued that “Iran’s regime refuses to compromise on missiles or its nuclear program,” under the headline “The Ayatollah Is Choosing War.”

Citing stalled nuclear negotiations in Geneva, the editorial said talks ended with “both sides still far apart on key issues.” It added: “Iran rejected the idea of transferring uranium stockpiles abroad. It also has objected to ending enrichment, dismantling its nuclear facilities and permanent restrictions on its program.”

The Journal said the regime “won’t even let Mr Trump make a mistake,” and wrote that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “apparently feels that giving in to U.S. demands would be a greater risk to his rule than incurring an attack.”

The New York Times, in a news analysis published Saturday, described the strike as “the ultimate war of choice,” asserting that “There was no immediate threat from Iran.”

“With his broad attack on Iran early Saturday morning and his call to the Iranian people to overthrow their government, President Trump has embarked on the ultimate war of choice,” the Times wrote.

The analysis added: “He was not driven by an immediate threat. There was no race for a bomb.”

Quoting Richard N. Haass, the former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Times wrote: “As in the second Iraq war, there wasn’t a necessity to attack Iran, there was an opportunity.”

In his November 2024 election night speech, Trump had said: “We defeated [Islamic State] in record time, but we had no wars. They said he will start a war. I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.”

Vice President JD Vance told The Washington Post days before the attack: “The idea that we’re going to be in a Middle Eastern war for years with no end in sight — there is no chance that will happen.”

The United States and Iran have been adversaries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Relations collapsed after the 444-day hostage crisis, and tensions have periodically escalated over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional proxy networks and missile development.

Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal during Trump’s first term and reimposed sweeping sanctions.

Karnataka woman records live missile attack in Bahrain, video goes viral

Bengaluru, Feb 28 (IANS) A Karnataka woman has recorded a video of what she described as the live war situation in Bahrain after Iran reportedly launched missile attacks on US military installations.

The video, which surfaced on Saturday, has gone viral on social media platforms. The courage of the woman, Sabreen, in recording the visuals amid the tense situation has been widely praised online.

The 2.11-minute video, shot from the terrace of her residence in Bahrain, captures billowing smoke in the distance following the reported missile strikes on US military bases.

In the video, Sabreen introduces herself in Kannada, saying, “Hi all, my name is Sabreen. I am from Karnataka, India. I hail from Shiralakuppa town in Shikaripura taluk of Shivamogga district. I am sharing this because I am currently in Bahrain.”

“There is an atmosphere of fear in Bahrain. You know why — it is because of the war between America, Israel and Iran. All Kannada people residing in Bahrain are scared. Not only Kannada people, but locals and people from various parts of the world are also fearful,” she says in the video.

“I will show you the live attack by Iran on US military establishments in the Zaffeir area of Bahrain. Iran is attacking the US military base here,” Sabreen states.

“I will show you live visuals of billowing smoke from the US installations. Since morning, missiles have been fired one after another. The sounds of the bomb blasts are frightening,” she says.

“It is a little peaceful now. That is why I have come to the terrace to record this video. You can see the billowing smoke behind me. It is clearly visible. Since morning, it has been a frightening atmosphere here. We do not know where all this will lead. We can only pray to God,” Sabreen adds.

She further says that in the morning, missiles were seen moving above residential areas. “The entire sky above us was filled with missile movement,” she said.

The authenticity of the visuals and the exact locations mentioned in the video could not be independently verified.

T20 WC: ‘We couldn’t execute our plans well,’ says Salman Agha after Pakistan’s exit from the event

Kandy, Feb 28 (IANS) Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha admitted that dew, execution issues, and long-standing middle-order concerns played a key role in his team’s exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, even after registering a dramatic five-run win over Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Stadium on Saturday.

Pakistan defended a huge total of 212/8 but failed to restrict Sri Lanka before 147, the margin required to overtake New Zealand on net run rate, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

Reflecting on the match and Pakistan’s campaign, Agha said losing the toss made the task difficult on a pitch that became increasingly challenging for bowlers due to heavy dew. “I think when I lost the toss, it was always going to be challenging because of the dew. It was a very good pitch and restricting them to 148 was always going to be difficult,” Agha said in the post-match presentation.

“If I had won the toss, it could have been a different story. Dew was definitely a factor, and we couldn’t execute our plans the way we wanted to,” he added.

Agha also pointed to an off day for the spin attack and accepted that such setbacks are part of the T20 format. “Our spin has been brilliant, but today Usman had an off day. That can happen in T20 cricket,” he said.

Looking at the bigger picture, the Pakistan skipper did not shy away from addressing the team’s batting struggles across the tournament. “We couldn’t bat well throughout the tournament. It was only Sahibzada Farhan who batted exceptionally well. If someone had supported him, it could have been a different story,” Agha noted.

He added that the middle order remains a major area of concern. “The middle order has been a problem for a few years now. We need to sit down and seriously look at that department,” he said.

Agha also focused on Pakistan’s failure to finish strongly despite dominating most of the innings. “We missed quite a few runs in the last two overs. If we had scored 10–15 more runs, it could have changed the outcome,” he concluded.

EAM Jaishankar holds calls with Iranian, Israeli FMs to urge de-escalation

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar engaged in back-to-back telephone conversations with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts on Saturday, expressing India’s deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East following a major joint US-Israel strike on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions.

The diplomatic outreach comes as the region faces heightened tensions after explosions rocked Tehran and other sites, with Iran launching missiles toward Israel and US bases across the Gulf.

In a post on X, Jaishankar detailed his evening telecon with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, stating that he shared India’s profound concern about the recent developments in Iran and the broader region.

He emphasised the need to prevent further instability.

The call highlights New Delhi’s position that prolonged conflict would harm regional peace and global stability.

Earlier, Jaishankar spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, reiterating India’s firm call for dialogue and diplomacy as the path to de-escalating tensions.

India has consistently advocated restraint, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, and avoidance of escalation that could endanger civilians.

The Ministry of External Affairs echoed this stance, expressing deep concern over the fast-evolving events and urging all parties to prioritise dialogue over military confrontation.

The strikes, described by Israel as pre-emptive and by the US as “Operation Epic Fury,” targeted Iranian military and leadership sites, prompting fierce retaliation, including missile barrages on US-linked facilities in multiple countries.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the operations and urged Iranians toward regime change, while Iranian officials vowed strong responses.

The escalation has sparked fears of a wider war, with international bodies like the Red Cross warning of a dangerous chain reaction.

India’s active diplomacy reflects its balanced approach in West Asia, balancing strong ties with Israel and historical relations with Iran.

New Delhi continues to closely monitor developments, advocating immediate restraint to safeguard regional stability and protect Indian interests.
