‘A moment of pride and emotion’: Shubhanshu’s parents on PM Modi’s video call

New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a heartfelt connection with Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on Saturday via a video call from Mission Control.

The conversation not only highlighted India’s growing strides in space but also offered a deeply emotional moment for Shukla’s family.

With hearts full of pride and eyes brimming with emotion, Shubhanshu Shukla’s parents listened to their son speak to Prime Minister Modi from space — a moment they say they will cherish forever.

IANS spoke to family members of the astronaut after PM Modi’s conversation with him.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, said, “When the Prime Minister called, I was overwhelmed. His blessings and encouragement filled us with pride. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts. His genuine concern truly touched us — it’s a matter of immense honour that our son is representing the entire nation.”

He added that PM Modi’s message underscored India’s commitment to uninterrupted space exploration, benefiting generation after generation.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s mother, Asha Shukla, expressed her admiration: “This is Prime Minister Modi’s strength — he resonates with each person in such a simple yet profound manner. We are grateful to him for reaching out to Shubhanshu. That moment of pride is unforgettable.”

Cousin Ashish Dixit also shared his joy: “We were all eagerly waiting for this moment — when the Prime Minister would speak to him. It was truly fulfilling.”

During the video exchange, PM Modi inquired about Shukla’s well-being and even cheekily asked if he had brought halwa.

Shukla replied that he had indeed — and flew on to describe how India looks magnificent from up above, with no borders in sight, reinforcing the unifying vision of space exploration.

These personal exchanges aren’t merely symbolic.

They also align with India’s broader mission of asserting a sustained presence in space.

“The Prime Minister has sent a message that this kind of space exploration will continue relentlessly,” noted Shambhu Dayal Shukla.

“It’s not just for today — it’s for generations to come.”

Group Captain Shukla, currently aboard the International Space Station as part of the Axiom‑4 mission, is set to spend the next fortnight conducting scientific experiments and engaging with communities back home.

The family’s reaction reflects the optimism of a nation watching its dreams of space journey unfold.

Dynastic ambitions still find space in our polity today: Union Minister

New Delhi, June 28 (IANS) Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh on Saturday said that self-righteousness coupled with dictatorial tendencies, opportunism, lack of democratic ethos, and dynastic ambitions were the key traits that led to the imposition of the Emergency.

“Unfortunately, these traits still find space in our polity today,” he said, addressing a symposium titled “Bhartiya Loktantra aur Samvidhaan ka Sabse Andhkaarmaya Daur: Na Bhoolein, Na Shama Karen” organised under the banner of #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency (1975–77) at the Delhi Assembly.

Elaborating on how the Emergency scarred India’s democratic fabric, he said: “The dark period between 1975 and 1977 impacted every citizen’s life in some form — fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was muzzled under rigid censorship, and thousands were detained without trial.”

Satyanarayan Jatiya, Former Union Cabinet Minister and Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and Mohan Singh Bisht were also present on the occasion.

A special commemorative booklet titled “Aapatkal @50” was released during the programme, along with the screening of a documentary highlighting the events and impact of the Emergency.

MoS Singh said forced sterilisation drives and mass demolitions were carried out in the name of urban development.

“The 42nd Constitutional Amendment, passed in 1976, even extended the term of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies from five to six years — a move that was rightly overturned by the 44th Amendment in 1978, restoring the people’s faith in democratic processes,” he said.

Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta underscored the unfinished task of bringing complete accountability to light.

He said, “The investigation into the Emergency’s aftermath remains incomplete. The Shah Commission Report 1978 could not undertake a comprehensive examination of the full scale of human rights violations and administrative excesses.”

“It is imperative that a new commission be formed to revisit and investigate the atrocities perpetrated during and after the Emergency.” However, it is important to note that those guilty of imposing emergency haven’t been brought to justice, he added.

Questioning the controversial changes made during this period, Gupta added, “Why were the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ inserted into our Constitution through the 42nd Amendment under the cover of the Emergency?”

He said such foundational alterations must always have a broad national consensus and debate, not be imposed arbitrarily.

“Every government must ensure that the lessons of the Emergency are neither forgotten nor repeated. Regular awareness programmes like today’s symposium are vital to remind future generations that the Constitution’s sanctity cannot be compromised,” he said.

Smriti Mandhana becomes first Indian woman to score tons across all formats

Nottingham, June 28 (IANS) Smriti Mandhana created history with a century against England in the first T20I at Trent Bridge as she became the first Indian woman to score a hundred in all three formats. She is also the second Indian woman to score a T20 ton after regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

Her 112 off 62 deliveries, in an innings laced with 15 boundaries and three maximums, powered India to a massive total of 210/5 in 20 overs, their highest total against England in T20 Internationals. Mandhana’s maiden T20 century on Saturday was the 14th time she has crossed the triple-digit mark in her career, with 11 tons in ODIs and two coming in the longest format.

With regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur rested as a precautionary measure after suffering a head injury, vice-captain and left-handed opener Mandhana is leading the side in her absence.

India have also handed a debut to left-arm spinner N. Shree Charani, while Sneh Rana makes a comeback into the T20I team after two years.

The 28-year-old Mandhana, who hails from Mumbai, made her international debut for India in a T20 match against Bangladesh women at Vadodara on April 5, 2013. She was just 16 at the time. She scored her maiden international century – 102 from 109 balls – against Australia in an ODI match at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart in 2016. In 2021, she scored her maiden Test century in the pink ball Test against Australia on the Gold Coast.

Her most prolific format remains One-Day Internationals. She is coming off a prolific year with four ODI centuries in the 2024 calendar year, earning her another major record in women’s cricket. No other batter has ever managed more than three tons in a single calendar year. She was named the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and was also named in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year. Three cyber fraudsters arrested for Rs 3.26 crore scam in Noida

Noida, June 28 (IANS) Noida Cyber Police have apprehended three members of a gang involved in a massive cyber fraud case where a businessman from Noida was cheated out of Rs 3.26 crore.

All three individuals allegedly lured the victim by promising five times the profit through investments in the stock market. However, it turned out to be a scam.

The three accused — Puneet, Himanshu, and Vijay Chaudhary — were arrested near Noida Stadium. According to the police investigation, Puneet had rented out his bank account to Himanshu.

Using this account, approximately Rs 30 lakh was transferred as part of the fraudulent transactions. Later, Vijay Chaudhary took control of the same account from Himanshu and used it extensively for conducting cyber fraud activities.

The cybercrime team has revealed that the account witnessed transactions amounting to nearly Rs 1 crore, and the probe into the case is still ongoing to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify any other possible suspects.

Manisha Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Cyber Crime, confirmed the arrests and stated, “We have detained the three accused involved in this cyber fraud. Our investigation is progressing, and we are committed to bringing all those responsible to justice.”

The modus operandi of the accused involved creating a false impression that investing in certain stock market schemes would yield high returns, thereby duping the businessman into transferring huge sums of money. Once the money was transferred, these criminals used multiple bank accounts to launder the proceeds. This is how they used to avoid detection, said the police.

Crime experts are of the view that this case highlights the increasing sophistication of cyber fraud schemes targeting investors, particularly through promises of unusually high returns in the stock market. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and verify investment opportunities through legitimate channels before committing funds.

The Noida Cyber Police are actively tracing the flow of money and examining digital footprints to dismantle the entire network behind this fraud. They are also coordinating with banks and other financial institutions to freeze the accounts linked to the suspects.

As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge, potentially revealing the broader network and modus operandi used by the accused in executing such high-value scams.

Honeymoon murder case: ‘Mangalsutra’ clue made Sonam Raghuvanshi a prime suspect

Shillong, June 12 (IANS) The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya was unravelled after investigators found a mangalsutra and a ring left behind in a suitcase by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, at a Sohra homestay, Meghalaya Police said.

The ornaments became the first crucial lead in what turned out to be a chilling case of contract killing, allegedly masterminded by Sonam and her boyfriend.

Raja, 29, and Sonam, 25, who had recently tied the knot in Indore on May 11, reached Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon. The couple vanished on May 23 in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, just hours after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village.

On June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. The search for Sonam concluded when she surrendered in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur on June 9.

Police also arrested her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, along with three contract killers allegedly hired by Sonam to carry out the murder.

Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang revealed that a breakthrough in the case came when police recovered a mangalsutra and a ring from the suitcase Sonam had left at the Sohra homestay.

“A married woman leaving behind the ornaments gave us a clue to pursue her as a suspect in the case,” Nongrang said.

According to a police officer involved in the investigation, the couple had arrived at the Sohra homestay on May 22 without prior booking and were unable to secure a room.

They left their luggage at the property and planned to trek over 3,000 steps to reach Nongriat village, famous for its double-decker living root bridge.

The couple spent the night at a homestay in Nongriat and checked out early on May 23. After trekking back to Sohra, they collected their scooter from a parking area and rode toward Weisawdong Falls.

It was at this location that Raja was allegedly murdered in front of Sonam by the three hired assassins.

A tour guide later informed police that he had seen the couple accompanied by three Hindi-speaking men while trekking back from Nongriat to Sohra, a detail that significantly aided the investigation.

“All the accused have admitted to the crime, and with all the evidence gathered, there is no room for denial,” the officer added.

The police on Wednesday also said that all five accused have confessed to their roles in murdering Raja.

A court in Shillong has since remanded Sonam, her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, and the three contract killers to eight days of police custody as the probe into the gruesome murder continues.

US partially evacuates embassy staff from Iraq

Washington, June 12 (IANS) Non-essential US embassy staff and their dependents have been ordered to leave Iraq due to unspecified security risks, sources from the US State Department have said.

“Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq,” the State Department said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies,” it added.

Also on Wednesday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the voluntary departure of US military dependents from the Middle East.

The security risks leading to the ordered departure from Iraq are not immediately clear, reports Xinhua news agency.

According to media reports, Iran recently threatened to strike US bases in the region if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program fail.

US President Donald Trump told a podcast on Wednesday that he was growing less confident in reaching a nuclear deal with Iran.

“I don’t know,” Trump told the “Pod Force One” podcast when asked about talks over the Iran nuclear program. “I don’t know. I did think so, and I’m getting more and more – less confident about it.”

Later on Wednesday, when asked why families of US military personnel were authorised to leave the Middle East, Trump said: “You will have to see.”

White House special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi this weekend for a sixth round of nuclear talks.

Delhi boils under heatwave, red alert issued

New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) Delhi will continue to sizzle under a scorching heatwave on Thursday as the mercury is expected to remain dangerously high, prompting the issuance of a red alert across the national capital, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said that temperatures ranged from 40.9 to 45 degrees Celsius across various weather stations on Wednesday, while the heat index — a measure of how hot it feels when humidity is taken into account — reached an alarming 51.9 degrees Celsius.

At 5:30 p.m., Ayanagar was the hottest location in the city, recording a blistering 45 degrees Celsius.

Other parts of the capital were not far behind: Ridge 43.6 degrees Celsius, Palam logged 44.5 degrees Celsius, Pitampura 43.5 degrees Celsius, Safdarjung — Delhi’s base weather station — 43.3 degrees Celsius, and Lodhi Road 43.4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Mayur Vihar reported a relatively lower yet severe 40.9 degrees Celsius.

The soaring temperatures are forecast to persist until the end of the day, with a gradual decrease expected from Friday, June 13, onward.

The IMD bulletin observed that these temperatures are three to four degrees Celsius higher than usual, contributing to ongoing heatwave conditions expected to persist until Thursday.

The red alert, the highest warning level issued by the IMD, advises residents to take action by staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and limiting outdoor activities, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Looking ahead to Thursday, the weather department has predicted maximum temperatures between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 60 kmph are likely, accompanied by a possibility of very light to light rain or thunderstorms in the evening or night.

Relief is expected from June 13, when the severity of the heatwave is anticipated to ease, prompting the IMD to downgrade the warning to an orange alert.

Between June 14 and 17, Delhi may see a notable dip in temperatures, ranging from 37 to 42 degrees Celsius.

The drop will likely be accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds, which could alleviate the ongoing heat stress to some extent.

Congress punished Laxman Singh for speaking truth: MP BJP chief

Bhopal, June 12 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Bharatiya Janasta Party Chief V.D. Sharma has said that former Congress MLA Laxman Singh was punished for daring to “speak truth” which was not received well by the “sycophants” of the Lok Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

He added that Congress says that it gives freedom to its party workers to express their views, but the reality is quite the opposite, and expelling former MLA Laxman Singh from the party was an example of it.

The BJP leader made these remarks responding to Congress’ decision to expel former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh’s younger brother Laxman Singh for his repeated anti-party activities.

“Through expelling Laxman Singh from the party, Congress has sent a message to its party cadre that those who would dare to speak truth will be shown the exit door. Congress wants slaves, and not the leaders, who dare to speak truth,” he added.

The Congress Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday expelled Laxman Singh from the party for six years, citing repeated instances of anti-party activities.

The decision came nearly more than a week after Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Bhopal on June 3 in which he said that those creating hurdles should step aside on their own or will be expelled from the Congress.

On April 25, Laxman Singh criticised the party leadership following the Pahalgam terror attack.

“Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra are naive. The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity,” he said during a condolence meeting organised to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attack.

In another striking statement that very day, Laxman Singh alleged that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was colluding with terrorists.

Taking note of his remarks, the Congress Disciplinary Action Committee issued him a show cause notice on May 9, demanding an explanation within 10 days.

In the notice, member secretary Tariq Anwar said, “This is to bring to your attention that a complaint has been received from Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief Jitu Patwari and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary In-charge of Madhya Pradesh Harish Chaudhary regarding your repeated public statements, which have caused serious damage to the image and dignity of the Congress.”

“It has further been noted that your recent statement has crossed all acceptable limits, particularly the derogatory and disrespectful remarks directed at senior party leadership, including the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi,” the notice said.

Defiant in his stance, Laxman Singh challenged the Congress to expel him immediately if it deemed his comments unacceptable.

However, his response was found unsatisfactory, prompting the party’s disciplinary wing to recommend his removal.

Following approval from the Congress high command, Tariq Anwar formally announced Laxman Singh’s expulsion on Tuesday.

The princely state of Raghogarh has long wielded influence in Madhya Pradesh politics, with Digvijaya Singh serving as the Chief Minister before moving to the Rajya Sabha.

His son, Jaivardhan Singh, represents Raghogarh in the State Assembly, while Laxman Singh has served as both a Member of Parliament and a legislator from Chachauda.

Despite his political tenure, he has often been perceived as receiving less prominence than Digvijaya Singh’s immediate family.

He also had a brief stint with the BJP.

Tensions simmered in 2018 when Congress returned to power in Madhya Pradesh after 15 years.

Laxman Singh had expected a Ministerial position, given his seniority, but was overlooked in favour of Digvijaya Singh’s son, Jaivardhan Singh.

Though he refrained from public dissent at the time, he continued to express his grievances intermittently.

Earlier in the day, the policemen first arrested her son Aryan Khan and then her daughter Zoya Khan, a co-accused in the porn racket case.

Based on the questioning of Aryan and Zoya, state police sources said the whereabouts of their mother were available and based on that she was also arrested late Wednesday evening from a hideout in the Alipore area in south Kolkata.

The main charges against Shweta, Aryan, and Zoya are holding a woman from the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal captive for six months and brutally assaulting her with an iron rod after she refused to participate in pornographic video shoots allegedly orchestrated by the three accused.

Since Zoya is a minor, her case will be processed under the Juvenile Justice Act and referred to the Juvenile Justice Board.

Meanwhile, Aryan has denied his involvement in the porn rackets and said that he had a relationship with the victim woman who wanted to marry him.

Police action has intensified after the National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the incident and wrote to the West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, demanding immediate arrests under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

The NCW also instructed the state police to ensure that the victim receives free medical treatment and psychological counselling.

Additionally, the Commission has directed the DGP to submit a detailed action-taken report within three days.
