Read MoreMumbai, June 7 (IANS) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday criticised Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his write-up in a daily in which he alleged that Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy.
CM Fadnavis in his reaction said: “Rahul Gandhi has accepted his defeat in Bihar! As long as Rahul Gandhi keeps giving himself false assurances, his party can never win. By making such baseless remarks, Rahul Gandhi has insulted the voters of Maharashtra, and for this, I strongly condemn him.”
On the other hand, Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora also targeted Rahul Gandhi. He said: “Blaming the Election Commission or EVMs months after losing reeks of sour grapes. Instead of peddling conspiracy theories, the Opposition should take a long, hard look in the mirror. After all, a bad carpenter always blames his tools.”
Earlier, Congress in-charge (Maharashtra) Ramesh Chennithala claimed that the state’s democracy was not defeated but it was butchered.
Strongly defending Rahul Gandhi’s observations in his write-up, he said that with irrefutable facts and unflinching clarity the leader of opposition has exposed a chilling truth. “The mandate of the people in Maharashtra was hijacked — not by the will of the voters, but through manipulation, deceit, and a systematic assault on democratic institutions,” he alleged.
“Rahul Gandhi’s powerful expose is not merely an article — it is a wake-up call. It exposes how Maharashtra, once a proud torchbearer of democratic values, has become a cautionary tale of how institutions can be compromised, how power can be snatched instead of earned, and how silence can become complicity. This is no longer about one state or one election. It is about the soul of our democracy,” said Chennithala.
“We urge the Election Commission to break its silence. The people of Maharashtra — and of India — deserve answers. We call upon every citizen to stay vigilant, stay informed, and stay united. For if we allow such subversion to go unchecked, we may soon lose not just elections — but the very freedoms that define us,” he added.
Further, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshwardhan Sapkal said that Rahul Gandhi’s article sparked a political earthquake and asked why there is no probe into Maharashtra Assembly election fixing.
“Why are BJP leaders Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis answering questions meant for the Election Commission? Why is the Commission silent? The ‘Maharashtra Pattern’ of vote tampering is a conspiracy to be used in Bihar, Mumbai civic polls, and upcoming local body elections,” he alleged.
He announced that the Congress would hold torchlight protests across Maharashtra on June 12.

Read MoreWashington, April 7 (IANS) The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition by Tahawwur Rana to stop his extradition to India to face legal consequences for his role in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed 157 people.
“Application (…) denied by the Court,” read the Supreme Court docket as updated Monday.
Rana had tried to stop his extradition, citing fears of torture, citing a UK case.
“A man convicted of money laundering was prevented from being extradited by a London court upholding his fears of torture. If that person could not be extradited to India because he was likely to be tortured, the petitioner is even more likely to be tortured and similarly should not be extradited,” Tillman J. Finley, counsel to Rana, said in the application.
The application was rejected by Justice Elena Kagan in March. Rana went on appeal to Chief Justice John Roberts, and the matter was posted for conference on Friday.
The justices’ verdict was posted on Monday.
Rana is wanted in India for helping David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American found guilty by a US jury of scoping out the targets hit by the Lashkar-e-Tayyeba terrorists in 2008.
Although he was acquitted by a US jury of providing material support for the attacks, he was found guilty of two other charges for which he was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.
Due to failing health in the aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic, he was ordered to be released from jail. But he was rearrested for extradition to India.
Headley had secured himself a guarantee against extradition in a plea deal with US authorities.
Rana appealed against his extradition and had now exhausted his legal options with his appeal to the chief justice being denied.
President Donald Trump had announced his extradition to India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the White House in February.
Rana had subsequently gone to the Supreme Court to stop his extradition.
It could not be immediately ascertained how soon he will be on a flight to India.

Kolkata, March 10 (IANS) A fresh petition at a division bench of the Calcutta High Court was filed on Monday alleging police excesses against the students of Kolkata’s iconic Jadavpur University (JU) in the March 1 ruckus case.
Two students were hospitalized after being “allegedly and deliberately” hit by the vehicle of West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu on the university premises.
The fresh petition has been filed at the same single judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, which had last week, while hearing a similar case on the Jadavpur University crisis, expressed ire over the alleged “biased and one-sided” investigation by the Kolkata Police. The court had also directed the city police to register FIRs based on the complaints filed by the university students instead of just addressing the complaints filed by the Trinamool Congress-affiliated West Bengal College & University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA).
The fresh petition was filed by Uddipan Kundu, an activist of CPI(M)’s student wing, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). The matter is likely to be heard on Tuesday.
In the petition, Kundu has accused the police of “repeatedly” and “unnecessarily” summoning the university students in the name of an investigation.
He accused the police of harassing the students when the latter refused to hand over their mobile phones to the cops during the earlier interrogation of March 7. Thereafter, Kundu alleged, the same students were summoned again by the cops for interrogation.
On March 1, a ruckus broke out within the university campus when the Minister’s car was allegedly stopped after it entered the campus, and a scuffle followed. The students were demanding immediate elections for the university’s students’ council.
The agitating students alleged that while Base decided to leave the campus in the face of the protests, his vehicle deliberately hit the two agitating students, following which they were severely injured and had to be hospitalized.
Amid the protests, the Minister received minor injuries and fell sick. He was taken to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital and was discharged later.
During the hearing on another case in the same matter last week, Justice Ghosh made some observations on the intelligence failure of the Special Branch of the Kolkata Police, saying that they did not have prior information about student agitation while the Education Minister was there.
Drawing a reference to the recent students’ movement in Bangladesh, Justice Ghosh also observed that if such intelligence failures continue, the situation in the state might become serious in the future, like that in the neighboring country.

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Firefighters with increased exposure to certain chemical compounds are more likely to develop gliomas — the most common type of malignant brain tumour — than individuals with other occupations, according to a study on Monday.
The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal CANCER, suggests a greater likelihood of haloalkane-associated mutations in firefighters with gliomas than in other patients with this type of brain cancer.
The gene mutations make up a mutational pattern or “signature” that other investigators previously associated with exposure to haloalkanes — used in flame retardants, fire extinguishants, refrigerants, and other products.
“As firefighters have exposure to such chemical agents, we examined mutational signatures in glioma brain tumours diagnosed in persons who worked as firefighters versus those who did not,” said Elizabeth B. Claus, Professor at the Yale University School of Public Health.
The study followed 35 participants, of which 17 had an occupational history of firefighting. Compared with the other 18 participants, firefighters were more likely to have the haloalkane-associated mutational signature, especially if they had been firefighters for many years, the study showed.
Among non-firefighters, the mutational signature was more likely in those with occupations that also possibly exposed them to haloalkanes, such as car painting and machine maintenance.
“Our study provides preliminary data but will need confirmation in a larger data set and across a wider range of occupations,” said Dr. Claus.
“Identifying exposure to such mutational agents is important to inform public health intervention strategies and pinpoint occupational hazards that may be avoidable,” the researcher added.
Glioma is the most common malignant primary brain tumour and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The malignant brain tumour develops in the glial cells that surround neurons, affecting motor and neurological abilities and functions.
It also impacts cognitive functions and may also affect the personality of the patient. People of all ages, including children, adolescents, and young adults are at risk of gliomas.
Notably, it represents about 20 per cent of all brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumours and is considered rare cancer because it affects less than 6 out of 100,000 persons every year.

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Political leaders from Maharashtra have strongly reacted to the controversial remarks made by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President, Raj Thackeray, regarding the Ganga water during the recent Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj.
Raj Thackeray mocked the devotees who bathed in the Ganga during the religious event, claiming the river remains polluted despite various efforts to clean it.
Raj Thackeray said, “I have been hearing that the Ganga will be cleaned since the time of the late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The truth is that the Ganga has still not been cleaned. We call it Ganga Ma, but not a single river in the country is clean.”
He further stated that he refused to touch the Ganga water brought by one of his close aides, suggesting that the river was still polluted.
In response to Raj Thackeray’s remarks, Shiv Sena leader and MLA Sanjay Gaikwad dismissed them as baseless.
He said, “Ganga’s water is so pure, and when so many people went there and took a dip, they felt happy doing so. He is making baseless statements. I don’t follow him on this.”
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLC, Amol Mitkari, also responded to the issue, emphasising that attending the Maha Kumbh was a personal choice.
Mitkari commented, “Going to the Maha Kumbh is a matter of personal opinion. After going to the Maha Kumbh, many people faced unfortunate incidents that cost them their lives. Some people didn’t feel it was appropriate to go. I personally didn’t feel the need to go.”
Meanwhile, Maharashtra NCP (SP) leader and MLA, Rohit Pawar, who participated in the Maha Kumbh and took a holy dip in the Ganga, acknowledged the concerns raised by Raj Thackeray about the river’s pollution but urged caution when discussing sensitive issues.
Pawar remarked, “I went to take a holy dip in the Ganga during Maha Kumbh. It is part of our faith. However, there are some pollutants visible in the water. Raj Thackeray was also talking about pollution in Ganga water, but one should be very careful when speaking about such a sentimental issue as it might hurt people’s sentiments.”
Raj Thackeray’s statements have sparked a political debate, with leaders from various parties defending the religious importance of the Maha Kumbh and the Ganga while acknowledging concerns about the river’s cleanliness.

Bengaluru, March 10 (IANS) Karnataka BJP chief B.Y. Vijayendra has alleged the involvement of two ministers of the Congress government in the sensational case of gold smuggling involving Kannada actress Ranya Rao.
Vijayendra said on Monday that the gold smuggling case involving actress Ranya Rao was one of the rarest incidents in the country’s history. Centered around Bengaluru, this case has created a web of suspicion around influential figures in the state government.
“Reports now suggest that two ministers may be involved, making this a highly concerning development,” Vijayendra stated.
“The investigation has revealed links to hawala transactions, and during her arrest, Ranya Rao allegedly attempted to contact a minister. This raises strong suspicions about the involvement of influential figures from the Congress-led Karnataka government. Additionally, since Ranya Rao is the daughter of a high-ranking police officer, the entire system’s integrity is now under scrutiny, bringing disrepute to the state. In light of this, the Chief Minister must disclose the truth about the case to the public,” Vijayendra demanded.
“If ministers are indeed involved, the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is likely already aware of it. The government must act transparently, expose the culprits, and ensure that the law takes its course. Failing to do so will result in the entire administration bearing the stain of this scam. The Chief Minister should uphold moral responsibility and ensure justice…If the government, like in previous scams, attempts to shield the corrupt, it will inevitably face embarrassment, especially with the ongoing CBI investigation. This case is not limited to just one actress; the investigation has already uncovered a vast network operating behind the scenes,” Vijayendra said.
“Ranya Rao was caught smuggling gold worth Rs 12.36 crore in a single day. How much more gold might she have smuggled in the past? How many more people are involved in this smuggling network? A deeper probe is necessary to uncover the full extent of the operation. Since the CBI is handling the case, the public believes that the investigation will reach a logical conclusion,” he stated.
Sources stated that the CBI, which has started a suo moto investigation into the case, is investigating the role of two ministers in the case. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and customs are also investigating the case.
The DRI investigation had found the involvement of influential persons in the case and briefed the CBI about it. Sources also stated that when she was being arrested, Ranya Rao had tried to dial the number of a serving minister. The DRI slueths had then snatched the mobile phone from her.
The investigation has also revealed that the payment was made to parties through hawala and cryptocurrency.
Sources further stated that Ranya Rao used to hand over smuggled goods to certain gold merchants only and refused to provide for other gold businessmen. Enraged by this, they tipped the DRI about the gold smuggling.
Ranya Rao is currently in DRI custody and is being grilled about the seizures. The CBI is preparing to take her custody, sources stated.
Kannada actress Ranya Rao, aka Harshavardini Ranya, in her statement to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on the day of her arrest, claimed that she is a freelancer in the real estate sector in Dubai and agreed to smuggle 17 bars of gold.
The DRI officials arrested Ranya Rao after seizing 14.8 kg of gold from her at the Bengaluru International Airport last Monday night.
The agency seized Rs 2.06 crore worth of gold and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from her upscale Lavelle Road flat, where she reportedly paid Rs 4.5 lakh in rent.
Karnataka DGP for Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, K. Ramachandra Rao, responding to the development of the arrest of his step-daughter, actress Ranya Rao, stated on Thursday that he was devastated and caught unawares by this development.

Bhopal, March 10 (IANS) The Congress MLAs in Madhya Pradesh staged a protest on the Assembly premises against the ruling BJP on the very first day of the budget session on Monday.
The Opposition members, led by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MP Assembly, Umang Singhar, reached the Assembly premises, covering their faces with black clothes and holding placards and posters with slogans against the BJP government.
Singhar said the Congress MLAs have covered their faces with black clothes as a mark of protest against the ruling BJP, who have maintained silence on public issues, and those raising voices are facing harassment from police.
“The Opposition wants debate on corruption, farmers and other public welfare issues during the budget session. However, the BJP does not want to discuss these issues. When Congress MLAs sought answers on corruption issues, they were being pressured to withdraw their questions,” Singhar told IANS.
He also alleged that the ruling BJP was attempting to shield several influential persons, including politicians and senior bureaucrats, who have been allegedly involved in corruption, in which ex-RTO constable Saurabh Sharma and his associates have been arrested.
“Why have Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the entire BJP leadership maintained silence on it? Investigating agencies have found the involvement of several BJP leaders and senior bureaucrats, and those names should be disclosed,” Singhar added.
Meanwhile, the first day of the budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly began with the address of Governor Mangubhai Patel.
The state government will present its first full budget in the Vidhan Sabha on March 12. The House proceedings will be adjourned from March 14 to 16. The House will reconvene on March 17 and 18. A holiday will be observed on March 19 for Rang Panchami. House proceedings will continue on March 20 and 21, followed by another recess on March 22 and 23. The final day of the House proceedings will be March 24. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav-led BJP government is likely to present as many as five key bills during this session for discussion and approval from the House.

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) The cost of preparing both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis at home declined by 5 per cent in February compared to the corresponding figure for January this year, according to a Crisil report released on Monday.
For the vegetarian thali, the decline was driven by lower vegetable prices, particularly of onions, tomatoes and potatoes, while for a non-vegetarian thali, the cost eased with a decrease in broiler (chicken) prices, the report said.
Going ahead, the arrival of fresh rabi crops is expected to keep vegetable prices subdued, offering continued relief for vegetarian thali costs.
However, temperature conditions in March that have been above normal can impact the shelf life and quality of onions, which need to be stored for the next six months, as well as the quantity and quality of wheat — the most significant crop of the rabi season, the report states.
The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man’s expenditure. The data also reveals the ingredients (cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas) driving the change in the cost of the thali.
The ICRA report is in line with official figures that India’s retail inflation is on a downward trajectory. Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index fell to a 5-month low of 4.31 per cent in January as prices of vegetables and pulses eased during the month, bringing respite to household budgets, according to figures released by the Ministry of Statistics.
The easing of inflation reflects a steadily declining trend after having touched a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October. CPI inflation had declined to 5.48 per cent in November and 5.22 per cent in December.
The food inflation at 6.02 per cent in January 2025 is the lowest after August 2024.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced a 25 basis cut in the policy rate from 6.5 per cent to 6.25 per cent in the monetary policy review to accelerate growth amid global uncertainties.
He said that inflation has declined and is expected to moderate further and gradually align with the RBI’s target.
Now, with the retail inflation continuing with its downward trend, the RBI will have more headroom to follow a soft money policy to make more credit available to businesses and consumers, which will propel economic growth.

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria exposes the key flaw in Pakistan cricket after their disastrous run in the Champions Trophy, of which they were the host and became the first team to crash out of the tournament. He said that PCB spent a lot of money organising the mega event but failed to pay attention to the team and its preparation.
When India defeated Australia in the semifinal, Pakistan’s hopes of organising the final of the event, which they were hosting, were dashed. As per the hybrid formula agreed by Pakistan and ICC, the final was played in Dubai, instead of the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Speaking to IANS, Kaneria also rubbished the talks of India having an advantage of playing all its matches in Dubai, including the final, and said such things are beyond understanding.
After the semifinal win, India head coach Gautam Gambhir had also slammed critics for claiming that India have an ‘undue advantage’ due to them playing all Champions Trophy games at the same venue and told the ‘perpetual cribbers’ to ‘grow up.’
“For the next two or three days, there will be discussions about how Pakistan was the host and India won the trophy. Many people in Pakistan were talking about how India had the advantage. I don’t understand how such things can be said… (Dubai) It wasn’t India’s home ground. It used to be Pakistan’s home ground.
“I don’t think India has played matches in Dubai before the Champions Trophy. This same question was asked by a Pakistani journalist to Gautam Gambhir, and he gave a very apt and sharp response,” Kaneria told IANS.
Pakistan reportedly spent 16 million dollars to upgrade the three venues, including upgrades to National Bank Stadium (Karachi), Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
“Pakistan spent a lot of money, built stadiums, but the one thing they should have focused on – the team – they didn’t paid attention to. Pakistan was the host, yet they were the first to be eliminated from the tournament, while India remained unbeaten. Pakistan had to hand the trophy to India, which, in a way, was like the icing on the cake. When the Champions Trophy was announced, Pakistan made a lot of unnecessary noise…” he added.
Mohammad Rizwan-led side crashed out of the Champions Trophy in the group stage without any win to their name. They lost their opening game to New Zealand by 60 runs in Karachi, before suffering a six-wicket defeat to archrivals India pushed them to the brink of an early exit. However, they managed to put up a pint to their name as their last group game against Bangladesh was washed out and the two shared.
“They didn’t put a good team in the tournament… They played very poor cricket. If you talk about any technical matter with Pakistan, they will never accept it and will only criticise; that’s why they are moving backwards,” Kaneria said.
He continued, “After India’s team lost the BGT in Australia, they went on to win 8 ODIs and then even won the Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Pakistan’s team, the way they made it to the Champions Trophy after losing the tri-series, didn’t look like a team that could even make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
“They sent a team that should have been knocked out of the tournament much earlier. Pakistan have no good players or team combinations. Their problem is that they never get out of their politics, friendships, and family ties. Indian team, on the other hand, thinks only about India, and that’s why they are the winners.”

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) The number of women employees in Indian Railways has been steadily rising over the last 10 years, with the total crossing 1.13 lakh, which constitutes 8.2 per cent of the total workforce, up from 6.6 per cent in 2014, according to official figures.
Women are playing a bigger role in key operational jobs in the railway network. According to an official statement, 2,162 women are currently working as loco pilots, while 794 women have taken up the role of train managers (guards). Additionally, 1,699 female station masters are stationed across India.
The number of women loco pilots and station masters in Indian Railways has jumped fivefold over the past 10 years, a senior official said.
Apart from operational roles, women are making a significant impact in administrative and maintenance sectors as well. Indian Railways has 12,362 women office staff and 2,360 women supervisors. In track maintenance, a traditionally male-dominated field, 7,756 women are now working to ensure the safe running of trains.
Women are also actively involved in passenger services, with 4,446 serving as ticket checkers and 4,430 working as ‘pointsmen’ at railway stations across the country.
Besides, Indian Railways has operationalized several railway stations with all-women teams to enhance confidence in gender inclusivity. These stations include Matunga, New Amravati, Ajni and Gandhinagar railway stations.
Indian Railways, which is one of the world’s largest employers, with over 12.3 lakh employees working on its vast network, is also playing a key role in empowering women, a senior official said.
“Irrespective of gender, all the candidates fulfilling the prescribed eligibility criteria are eligible for recruitment,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in an answer to a question in Parliament recently.
The government has prioritized transforming Indian Railways into a world-class entity, which ferries on an average 2.3 crore Indians every day from one part of the country to the other at an affordable cost, and women are playing an increasing role in this endeavour, a senior official added.
