DMK alliance ‘crumbling’, claims EPS

Chennai, Oct 12 (IANS) AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Sunday said that the ruling DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu is facing “internal cracks”, with the Congress already demanding a larger share of seats and a greater role in government.

He asserted that the DMK has “no moral right” to talk about the AIADMK’s political alliances.

Addressing reporters after a party event, EPS said the AIADMK enjoys strong public support and will form the next government in the State.

“With people’s blessings, AIADMK will return to power and ensure that farmers benefit in every possible way,” he said. He added that a large number of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) supporters had enthusiastically attended his public meetings.

“We had instructed TVK workers to join our rallies only after obtaining consent from their party leadership,” he clarified.

Palaniswami dismissed criticisms from opposition parties, saying that such attacks were born out of frustration.

“They criticise us because they cannot tolerate our growing popularity. When we allied with the BJP earlier, we were targeted for that too. But it’s our decision who we align with,” he remarked.

Pointing out that parties like the Congress and VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) continue to partner with the DMK, EPS said they had no authority to question AIADMK’s alliances.

“Those who are already in alliance with the DMK have no right to comment on our coalition strategies. The AIADMK will ally with any party that shares our vision and goals. We are a movement of two crore dedicated cadres,” he declared.

Emphasising his party’s democratic and flexible approach, Palaniswami said, “All parties in our alliance function independently. That’s not possible in the DMK front. The Congress has now begun demanding more seats and a share in government. These developments clearly show that the DMK-led front is beginning to crack.”

“Concluding his remarks, EPS reiterated that the DMK’s allies lacked the political standing to comment on AIADMK’s affairs, saying, “It’s ironic that the DMK front, which can’t maintain unity within, dares to discuss our alliance decisions.”

BSNL’s indigenous 4G network to be upgraded to 5G in next 6-8 months: Minister

New Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) In the next six-eight months, the indigenously-developed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) 4G network will be upgraded to 5G, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Sunday.

Addressing the ‘Kautilya Economic Enclave 2025’ in the national capital, the minister said India has entered into the club of 4G technology with its own 4G standard.

“This is India’s innovation capability and innovation enterprise. But we are not going to rest. Within the next six to eight months, we will be switching these 4G towers to 5G networks and providing end-to-end 5G network capability across the length and breadth of India,” Scindia told the gathering.

Reflecting on the conclave’s theme “Seeking Prosperity in Turbulent Times,” the Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has transformed global challenges into opportunities through foresight and resilience.

India has joined a select group of five nations capable of delivering a complete, indigenous telecom ecosystem. BSNL has returned to profitability after 17 years, with its subscriber base rising from 78 lakh to 2.2 crore within a year.

Scindia noted that all towers are upgradable to 5G, preparing India for future technological demands.

He said India is set to become the world’s second-largest economy by 2027, demonstrating the nation’s ability to harness both wealth and intellect.

Last month, BSNL launched the Bharat Telecom Stack or intelligent ‘Swadesh 4G Network’, which will connect over 26,700 villages with high-speed internet connectivity for the first time.

BSNL unveiled the network, which is a modern and secure solution designed and developed entirely in India in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and Tejas Networks Limited.

With this launch, India becomes the fifth country in the world to have built a self-reliant, indigenous telecom technology stack supporting 4G and beyond.

Over 2.2 crore citizens will now have access to 4G data at affordable prices. Additionally, people in rural areas can now have services like digital learning, smarter farming tools and 24×7 telemedicine.

Andhra farmers throw tomatoes on roads as prices crash

Amaravati, Oct 5 (IANS) With the price of tomato dropping sharply, tomato farmers in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district are throwing their produce on roads.

The price in Pathikonda wholesale market in Kurnool district plummeted to one rupee per kilogram, dealing a huge blow to the farmers.

The tomato growers lodged their protest by dumping their produce on the road. This resulted in traffic jam on Gooty-Mantralayam Road.

The protesting farmers demanded that the government come to their rescue by ensuring remunerative prices. They also demanded immediate setting up of tomato processing factory in the region to help them.

Andhra Pradesh leads in tomato productivity with 41.22 tonnes per hectare across 62,000 hectares. The estimated tomato yield in the district is 22.17 lakh tonnes. In Kurnool alone, tomatoes are cultivated on around 4,800 hectares, yielding approximately 1,67,591 tonnes per annum.

Every year tomatoes are produced during two seasons — August to October (Kharif) and December to April (Rabi).

Pathikonda wholesale market is the second largest tomato market in the state after Madanapalli in Chittoor district.

As the fluctuating market prices were resulting in losses to tomato farmers in Pathikonda region, the state government decided to set up tomato processing unit.

A government order was issued early this year, allocating Rs 11 crore for the tomato processing unit on 2.5 acre land at Dudekonda.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had promised the plant during the election campaign last year.

Last month, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the TDP-led NDA government of gross neglect of the farmers after steep fall in the prices of onion and tomato in the state.

Jagan Mohan Reddy had remarked that the records which Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has set in pushing crop prices to rock-bottom levels cannot be matched by anyone.

“In Kurnool, onion is being sold for Rs 3 per kg and tomato for Rs 1.50 per kg. Are these prices for farmers to survive? Should the farmer not live?” he asked.

Stating that tomato growers were throwing their harvest on roads due to lack of buyers, Jagan Mohan Reddy had demanded immediate government intervention.

52 killed in climate-induced disasters in Nepal

Kathmandu, Oct 5 (IANS) At least 52 people have lost their lives in natural calamities over the last three days in Nepal, as the country has been experiencing incessant rainfall since Friday in most parts, an official of the Armed Police Force (APF) said.

APF Spokesperson Director Inspector General, Kalidas Dhaubaji, told IANS on Sunday evening that 52 people were killed, seven have gone missing, and 27 have been injured due to monsoon-induced disasters in different parts of the country.

“As many as 38 people died in eastern Ilam district alone due to landslides,” he said.

Besides human casualties, Nepal has also suffered infrastructure damage due to landslides and floods across the country.

According to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), a representative body of private-sector power developers, flooding and landslides affected 18 hydropower projects — 13 operating and five under-construction projects affecting power generation.

Power generation by 13 projects with a total capacity of 105.4 MW has remained halted due to damage to various infrastructure linked to these projects, the IPPAN said.

The country, which is rich in hydropower potential, is also facing risks to this vital infrastructure due to climate change-related disasters in recent years.

According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, riverbank erosion, flooding, and inundation occurred in various areas due to the recent incessant rainfall, resulting in the erosion of nearly 1,500 metres of embankments along riverbanks and causing an estimated preliminary loss of around Rs 100 million.

Some irrigation projects were also inundated due to flooding, according to the Ministry.

Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said that water levels of several rivers — including the Bagmati, Trishuli, Eastern Rapti, Lalbakaiya, and Kamala — had crossed the alert level due to prolonged rainfall but are now gradually receding.

Likewise, the water level in the Saptakoshi river crossed the danger level till Sunday afternoon, and its tributaries — mainly the Tamor, Sunkoshi, and Arun rivers — also surpassed the danger level but are now on a declining trend.

The Koshi river, often referred to as the “Sorrow of Bihar”, continues to remain a major concern for India because of the flooding and inundation it causes in Bihar during the monsoon.

Meanwhile, the Monsoon Response Command Post, a body under the Ministry of Home Affairs, decided on Sunday to make arrangements to provide immediate relief to the families of the deceased, continue rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts for individuals affected and displaced by monsoon-induced disasters, and request the concerned agencies to promptly collect data on the initial impacts and losses.

Likewise, the government body also decided to request local governments and relevant agencies to complete relief distribution, relocation, and rehabilitation of affected families, instruct the concerned agency to repair and reopen obstructed roads, and take immediate necessary actions to restore essential services such as water supply, electricity, and communication.

EOW launches statewide raids in Chhattisgarh excise scam case

Raipur, Sep 21 ( IANS) In a major crackdown on the alleged excise scam, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhattisgarh on Sunday launched a series of coordinated raids across the state, targeting liquor and coal dealers suspected of involvement in financial irregularities.

According to official sources, the EOW initiated surprise raids at 10 different locations spanning Raipur, Durg, and Bilaspur districts.

The operation is part of an ongoing investigation into a multi-crore excise scam that has rocked the state’s regulatory and business circles.

One of the key targets of the raid is a prominent liquor dealer based in Raipur. EOW officials were seen entering his residence with sealed documents and forensic teams, indicating the seriousness of the probe.

Sources suggest that the suspect’s business dealings are under scrutiny for alleged tax evasion and manipulation of excise records.

In Raipur alone, three to four locations are being searched simultaneously, with teams deployed to examine financial documents, transaction records, and digital evidence.

Similar operations are underway in Durg and Bilaspur, where coal dealers are also being investigated for suspected links to the scam. The excise scam, which allegedly involves the manipulation of liquor distribution licenses and the underreporting of sales to evade taxes, has prompted widespread concern over regulatory oversight in the state.

The EOW’s action is being seen as a decisive step toward uncovering the nexus between business operators and officials who may have facilitated the irregularities.

Officials have remained tight-lipped about the findings so far, stating that the investigation is in its early stages and further details will be shared once preliminary assessments are complete.

However, sources close to the probe indicate that several incriminating documents have already been recovered. The raids have sparked reactions across political and business communities, with many calling for a transparent and thorough investigation.

As the EOW continues its search operations, more names are expected to surface in connection with the scam. This is a developing story, and further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.

Kerala Minister defends turnout at Global Ayyappa Sangamam amid empty seat visuals

Kottayam, Sep 21 (IANS) As visuals of empty chairs from the Global Ayyappa Sangamam began circulating on television channels and social media, Kerala Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan on Sunday offered an explanation, dismissing the criticism as misleading and politically motivated.

The minister clarified that the one-day spiritual and cultural conference, held in Kottayam, saw a total participation of 4,126 devotees and dignitaries. Of these, 2,125 came from outside Kerala, representing states such as Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. A further 182 participants arrived from abroad, including 39 from Sri Lanka. In addition, 1,119 Ayyappa devotees travelled in vehicles arranged by various devaswom boards in the state.

Explaining the images of vacant chairs, Vasavan said the main venue itself had a seating capacity of 4,000, which was filled during the inaugural session. “Hundreds who arrived for the opening could not be accommodated inside and had to stand. After the inaugural ceremony, many participants moved to other halls to attend parallel panel discussions. The empty seats that appeared in visuals were simply the result of invitees shifting to their respective venues,” he said.

The minister criticised the circulation of photographs showing empty chairs, arguing that they were being used to paint a false picture of the event.

“Only those specifically invited to the main session remained there. The visuals being shared are from a short interval after the inaugural function, and they are being misused to spread misleading narratives,” he added.

Vasavan further underlined that the conference was entirely complaint-free. He noted that even a senior Congress leader from Karnataka, who attended the programme, had not raised any concerns about the arrangements.

“The event was smooth, well-organised, and a grand success. Participation exceeded expectations, and no one who attended went back dissatisfied,” he said.

Echoing CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan’s criticism of the media, the minister accused certain outlets of deliberately attempting to tarnish the image of the Global Ayyappa Sangamam. In reality, he insisted, the conference achieved its goal of bringing together devotees from across India and abroad in a unique spiritual congregation.
