Karnataka to Act Against Excessive Hospital Bills, Says Health Minister U.T. Khader

Bengaluru: Karnataka Health Minister U.T. Khader on Thursday held a meeting with the Private Hospitals Association at Arogya Soudha to discuss rising medical expenses, patient protection and measures to make healthcare more affordable.

Khader said patient welfare and public interest remained the government’s top priorities, stressing that no patient or family should face financial exploitation during a medical emergency. He said further decisions on excessive billing by private hospitals would be taken after consultations with health department officials.

The meeting discussed the need for a clear policy prohibiting hospitals from withholding a patient’s body over unpaid bills. The health department will formulate measures to address the issue, the minister said.

The government also discussed steps to reduce the cost of essential medicines used in cancer, cardiac and kidney care, besides curbing unauthorised increases in maximum retail prices (MRPs). A separate meeting with pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors will be held soon.

Khader said another meeting with insurance companies would be convened to address excessive billing for insured patients and simplify the claims process.

The minister also said the government had received representations from private hospitals concerning the Fire Department, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and implementation of the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act. Appropriate steps would be taken to address these concerns.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing a transparent and accountable healthcare system that protects patients from exploitation and improves access to affordable, quality medical care.
