New Tripura BJP chief vows to strengthen party ahead of 2028 Assembly polls

Agartala, May 29 (IANS) Newly appointed Tripura Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Abhishek Debroy said on Friday that, with the involvement of all senior leaders and party units, he would further strengthen the organisation ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

A day after BJP President Nitin Nabin appointed Debroy as the President of BJP Tripura Pradesh, he formally assumed charge of the important post at the party’s state headquarters here on Friday.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, outgoing party President Rajib Bhattacharjee, central observer Rajdeep Roy, several Ministers and senior state party leaders were present on the occasion.

The State BJP unit also organised a reception ceremony to formally welcome the new state President, Debroy, who is also a sitting MLA.

The 44-year-old Debroy, a first-time MLA elected from the Matarbari Assembly constituency in Gomati district of southern Tripura in the 2023 Assembly elections, is the 15th State BJP President.

The new state party Chief said that he would make efforts to further strengthen the party organisation from the booth level to the state level so that the BJP could be fully prepared to achieve better results in the next Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in February-March 2028.

During the reception programme, Debroy warned party workers and members against making comments on social media targeting the party and senior leaders, saying that such remarks on Facebook and other social media platforms harm the party’s image.

“Central and state leaders are closely monitoring the activities and social media comments of party workers, and stern action will be taken against those who make adverse comments against the party and senior leaders on social media platforms,” he said.

Chief Minister Saha, who earlier served as the State BJP President from January 15, 2020 to August 25, 2022, said that the appointment of a young state President would inspire more youths to join the BJP.

“Now the state party organisation would be restructured at all levels to further strengthen the BJP ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections,” CM Saha told the media.

The appointment of a new State BJP President in Tripura had long been overdue, with at least a dozen names doing the rounds in political circles over the past several months for the crucial organisational post.

A graduate in pharmacy, Debroy entered politics in 2001 through student activism and youth movements.

Before joining the BJP in 2017, he held various positions in the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, and later in the Youth Congress.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, outgoing State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and several other senior party leaders congratulated Debroy on his appointment as the new Chief of the party’s Tripura unit.

Taking to social media platform X, Chief Minister Saha wrote: “Heartiest congratulations to Abhishek Debroy Ji on being appointed as the President of BJP Tripura Pradesh. Confident that under his dynamic leadership and organisational vision, the party will grow stronger and continue working dedicatedly for the welfare of Tripura’s people. Wishing him a successful tenure ahead.”
